The United States has delivered a fresh consignment of military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and other security threats.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) disclosed the development on Thursday, saying the equipment was transported to Nigeria by a US Air Force C-17 aircraft over the weekend.
According to AFRICOM, the delivery was made under a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement between the United States and Nigeria.
The command said the shipment would further strengthen the security partnership between both countries and support Nigeria-led efforts to counter terrorism in the region.
AFRICOM described the delivery as “partnership in action,” noting that the military support was intended to assist Nigeria in addressing terrorism and other security challenges.
However, AFRICOM did not disclose the specific type, quantity or financial value of the equipment delivered. Reports from Vanguard said the equipment was delivered to Nigerian Air Force locations in Lagos and Kainji, Niger State.
The latest delivery comes amid continued military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, including defence equipment supplies, training and intelligence support.
The two countries have intensified security cooperation as Nigeria continues to confront terrorism and insurgency, particularly in the North-East and other parts of the country.
The delivery also comes amid adjustments to the deployment of US military personnel in Nigeria. Nigerian authorities have clarified that the reported withdrawal of some US personnel does not signal an end to bilateral security cooperation.
The latest consignment therefore represents another step in the ongoing US-Nigeria defence partnership, with Washington continuing to provide support for Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its military capabilities and combat terrorism.
