A United States Air Force sergeant has died after falling approximately 170 feet from the roof of a stadium during a military demonstration ahead of a college football game in San Antonio, Texas.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Alamodome, shortly before a match between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners and the United States Naval Academy’s Navy Midshipmen.
The deceased was identified as Technical Sergeant Ian Patterson, a member of the Air Force’s 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. He had served in the military for 15 years.
According to reports, Patterson was participating in a rappelling demonstration alongside three other service members as part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans event. The ceremony was organised to honour military personnel and veterans.
Witnesses said the sergeant appeared to descend rapidly from the stadium rafters before falling onto the field in front of thousands of spectators. Emergency responders attended to him at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Air Force Brigadier General Scott C. Mills expressed condolences to Patterson’s family, friends and colleagues, describing his service as significant to the military unit and those who worked alongside him. He said the unit was focused on supporting the bereaved family and fellow service members.
The incident is under investigation by the relevant military authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
Despite the tragedy, the football game proceeded after a brief delay. The incident left spectators and members of the university community distressed, prompting the institution to make support services available to those affected.
