Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has stirred reactions online after claiming that petrol prices in England are now significantly higher than those in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Omokri said fuel prices in England had risen to nearly three times the amount currently paid in Nigeria, attributing the increase to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

“Petrol is now ₦3,200 per litre in England, almost three times what we pay in Nigeria,” he wrote, adding that the rise in fuel costs is part of a global trend linked to the Middle East crisis rather than an issue affecting Nigeria alone.

His comments come amid a sharp rise in global crude oil prices driven by escalating geopolitical tensions and supply concerns affecting international energy markets.

Reports indicate that disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global shipping route responsible for transporting a significant portion of the world’s crude oil supply — have contributed to oil prices climbing to their highest levels since 2022.

The development has continued to generate discussions online, with many Nigerians reacting to Omokri’s comparison of fuel prices in both countries amid ongoing economic pressures at home.
