Two sisters, Nokwanda Klaas, 27, and Ayanda Klaas, 24, were tragically killed in Umbilo, Durban, on March 9, 2025, after being robbed and thrown from a moving taxi while returning home from work.
According to the advocacy group Women for Change, the sisters sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Nokwanda succumbed to her injuries the same day, while Ayanda passed away the following day due to severe head trauma.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
In response, Women for Change announced a peaceful demonstration on April 11, 2025, to protest gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in South Africa. The group called for urgent action, urging citizens to sign their petition and join the protest at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
“We are heartbroken over the loss of such beautiful souls. Two more sisters murdered. How many more until we declare GBV and femicide a National Disaster? Sign our petition and stand with us in a peaceful demonstration at the Union Buildings on 11 April 2025. Together, we demand the change our country so desperately needs,” the group stated.
