United States President Donald Trump will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday and is expected to present the trophy to the winners alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The White House confirmed that Trump will be present at the championship match in New Jersey, marking his first appearance at the tournament after all 102 previous matches held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president is looking forward to the occasion, describing the tournament as a successful showcase of the United States’ ability to host major international sporting events.
“We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending. This is a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage,” she said.
Leavitt also disclosed that President Trump is scheduled to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City ahead of the final.
Earlier in the week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed plans for the US president to join him in presenting the World Cup trophy after the final.
“Hopefully we’ll present the trophy together in the final. That’s always been the plan, and that’s how it has always been done in the past—the president of the country hosting the final presents the trophy together with the FIFA president,” Infantino said.
Addressing questions over Trump’s absence from the earlier matches, Infantino noted that the president had other official responsibilities.
“I suppose he still has a few other things to do. When he’s at the stadium, people will ask what he’s doing there when there’s so much happening around the world. I’m always in touch with him and his government, which is doing a great job with the World Cup,” he added.
Argentina booked their place in the final after defeating England 2-1 in the semifinals, while Spain secured their spot with a 2-0 victory over France. The two football giants will now battle for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
