Suspected Gunman Cole Tomas Allen Arrested, Faces Firearms and Assault Charges
United States President Donald Trump was swiftly evacuated by security agents after a gunman opened fire during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., triggering panic and a large-scale security response.
The high-profile event, attended by top government officials including Vice President JD Vance, cabinet members, and media figures, descended into chaos when gunshots were heard, prompting Secret Service agents to shout “shots fired” as attendees took cover under tables.
Authorities confirmed that the President, Vice President, and other senior officials were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries among them. However, a United States Secret Service officer was struck during the exchange of gunfire but was protected by a ballistic vest. The officer was later hospitalised and is reported to be in stable condition.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, who has since been taken into custody and is facing firearms and assault charges. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly breached a security checkpoint at the venue while armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives, and was wearing a ballistic vest.

Police described Allen as a “lone gunman” who engaged security personnel shortly after attempting to force his way into a secured area. Officials say he was subdued after an exchange of gunfire and transported to hospital for evaluation.

Speaking after the incident, President Trump described the suspect as a “would-be assassin,” confirming that he had been apprehended and praising law enforcement for their swift response. “He’s in custody and they’re asking him a lot of questions,” Trump said, adding that the injured officer was “in great shape” due to protective gear.
Deputy Director of the United States Secret Service, Matthew Quin, commended the agency’s response, stating that the attacker “underestimated the protective capabilities” of security personnel and was stopped immediately.
Veteran journalist Wolf Blitzer, who was present at the event, described the situation as “highly dangerous,” noting that he was only a few feet away from the suspect when the shooting began.
Further details from authorities indicate that the suspect had been staying at the same hotel where the event was held and may have exploited perceived security lapses. Federal investigators, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have launched a full-scale investigation, including searches linked to the suspect.
Officials also revealed that Allen allegedly sent a disturbing manifesto to family members shortly before the attack, outlining intentions to target senior government officials. The document reportedly contained extremist views and indicated premeditation.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche disclosed that investigators believe the suspect travelled by train from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., possibly to avoid detection.

Reacting to the incident, United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, stating that any assault on democratic institutions and press freedom must be strongly denounced. He expressed relief that all attendees, including the President and First Lady Melania Trump, were unharmed.

Following the incident, the remainder of the event was postponed as security agencies continue investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.
