Dankama, Katsina State — A mother and her five children have died following the collapse of their home during a heavy downpour in Dankama village, Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 5, 2025, around 2 a.m., while the victims were asleep.
The father of the family, Muhammad Sani, who was away at the time, confirmed the heartbreaking event to journalists. According to him, a total of ten people were affected by the collapse, with six fatalities and three others currently receiving treatment at a hospital for injuries sustained.
“It affected about 10 people, but sadly, six didn’t survive. Three are currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” Sani said, visibly shaken by the loss.
The deceased have been identified as Mariya Sani, 45; Mujahid, 20; Zahariya, 18; Hauwa, 15; Amira; and Nura Sani, 5.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the incident has left the Dankama community in deep mourning, with sympathisers flocking to the family residence to offer prayers and condolences.
Despite the devastation, Sani expressed his submission to fate, stating, “I surrender to Allah’s will. May He grant them eternal rest.”
Confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hajiya Binta Dangani, said officials had visited the bereaved family to offer condolences and assess the extent of damage for appropriate intervention.
