President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated the Hausa people as important contributors to Nigeria’s unity and progress as the country marks Hausa Day.
Tinubu shared the message on his social media account on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, describing the Hausa people as “great pillars” who play a vital role in strengthening the unity and development of Nigeria.
The President also praised the Hausa language, noting its growing influence beyond Nigeria and its importance as a language of communication, trade and cultural connection across the world.
Hausa Day, also known as World Hausa Day or Ranar Hausa, is observed annually on August 26.
The celebration was held at the historic Daura Palace, a significant location in Hausa history and culture.
Hausa Day began as a social media initiative by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari, who sought to promote the Hausa language online and highlight its cultural significance.
What started as a grassroots campaign has grown into an international celebration, with Hausa language and cultural events now taking place across parts of Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
Although the annual celebration has gained international attention, Hausa Day has not received formal recognition from the United Nations.
Hausa remains one of Nigeria’s major languages and is among the most widely spoken African languages, with millions of speakers across Nigeria, Niger and other parts of West and Central Africa.
In his message, Tinubu congratulated the Hausa community on the occasion and acknowledged the language’s growing role in promoting communication, commerce and unity.
“The Hausa people are great pillars that play a vital role in the unity and progress of Nigeria,” the President said.
“The Hausa language, without doubt, has flourished and has become a major language of unity and commerce across the world.”
