Three men tragically lost their lives while on a picnic at a river in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State on Boxing Day, December 26, 2025. The incident has left the community in mourning.
The victims were part of a group that visited the river for leisure. Their bodies were recovered during search and rescue operations on Saturday.
One of the deceased has been identified as Msughter Felixe Terwase, a native of Mkar, Gboko.
Photos circulating on social media showed emergency responders, an ambulance, and crowds of anxious onlookers gathered at the riverbank during the recovery efforts.
River Buruku is known for its strong currents and has previously recorded several drowning incidents, particularly during festive periods. Authorities continue to urge visitors to exercise caution when near the river.
