The Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State has imposed a 24-hour curfew following a fresh wave of deadly attacks and destruction of property by suspected armed militia groups in parts of the council.

The attacks, which targeted Wurkum communities around Didango, Mutum Daya, Kodai, Gurum and other neighbouring settlements, reportedly left several people dead and forced many residents to flee their homes.

According to reports, normalcy had begun to return to some of the affected communities after the deployment of security personnel. However, fresh attacks were launched on Thursday and Friday, further escalating tensions and worsening the security situation in the area.

In response to the renewed violence, the Chairperson of Karim-Lamido Local Government Council, Mrs. Virginia Baba Bambur, announced the immediate imposition of a 24-hour curfew across the affected communities.

In a statement, Bambur said the measure became necessary due to the persistent attacks, loss of lives and destruction of property recorded in recent days.

She directed all security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to ensure strict enforcement of the curfew.

The council chairperson also disclosed that government authorities would conduct a thorough investigation into the immediate and underlying causes of the crisis, with a view to bringing those responsible to justice.

Bambur appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring them that efforts were being intensified to restore peace and stability in the troubled communities.

Karim-Lamido Local Government Area has witnessed recurring incidents of communal violence, banditry and ethnic tensions in recent years, particularly involving the Karimjo and Wurkum groups. The conflicts have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of property and the displacement of numerous residents across affected communities.
