Former Governor of Sokoto State and serving Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has revealed details of his recent interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging that the probe is politically motivated.

Speaking in Sokoto after what he described as a “brief visit” to EFCC custody, Tambuwal said he honoured an invitation on August 6, answered questions, and was released—only to be asked to return on August 10 and 11. After hours of questioning on his second visit, he claimed EFCC officials insisted on “stringent bail conditions” despite his appeal to be granted self-recognition based on his public service record.

“My legal team of three Senior Advocates appealed for the bail terms to be varied, but they refused, forcing me to spend the night in detention,” he said. Tambuwal linked the timing of the EFCC’s actions to efforts aimed at discrediting him for being critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Sokoto State government of setting up a “kangaroo commission of inquiry” into his tenure.

“In Nigeria today, there are two lines: those with Bola Tinubu and his government, and those with the people of Nigeria. We chose to stand with the people,” he declared, accusing the APC of practising selective justice.
