The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, signalling the commencement of the 2026 Ramadan fast in Nigeria on Wednesday, February 18.

The announcement was conveyed on Tuesday by the Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, who spoke on behalf of the Sultan.

According to the statement, credible reports of the moon sighting were received from several parts of the country and were duly verified and accepted by the Sultanate Council, thereby confirming the start of Ramadan 1447AH.

The council explained that the Shehu of Borno made the declaration in line with established tradition, acting for the Sultan due to his temporary absence.

The Sultan also called on Muslims across the country to use the holy month for prayers, reflection, charity, and national intercession.

He urged the faithful to seek divine guidance for peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria, describing Ramadan as a period of sacrifice, discipline, and compassion.

Ramadan is observed annually by millions of Muslims, who fast daily from dawn to sunset while engaging in increased prayers, charity, and spiritual devotion.
