The House of Representatives has donated the sum of N10 million to victims of recent attacks in Riyom Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State as part of ongoing relief efforts across affected communities in the state.
The donation was presented at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Riyom, Da Gwom Rwey Riyom, Da Samuel Jok, by Hon. John Dafan, Member representing Shendam, Mikang, and Qua’an-Pan Federal Constituency, on behalf of the Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
The relief support is part of a broader intervention by the House of Representatives, which earlier presented N50 million to the Plateau State Government and pledged an additional N50 million to be distributed directly to the most affected local government areas — Bokkos (N20 million), Bassa (N20 million), and Riyom (N10 million). This brings the total intervention package to N100 million.
Speaking during the cheque presentation, Hon. Dafan said the gesture reflects the Speaker’s compassion and deep concern for Nigerians affected by violent attacks. “The Speaker has continued to respond swiftly wherever such tragedies occur, and Plateau is no exception,” he stated. “We are here to not only deliver this support but also collaborate with local leaders to find lasting solutions.”
Barr. Solomon Mwantiri, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM-A), received the donation on behalf of the victims. He expressed gratitude for the support, describing it as a strong message that the federal government remains concerned about the plight of affected communities. “This is the second major support we’ve received, the first being from the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu. We are grateful and assure the government of our cooperation,” he said.
Hon. Engr. Fom Dalyop Chollom, Member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency, commended the Speaker’s swift response. “This support will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the families affected by the persistent attacks. It’s time we begin identifying those who come into our communities with malicious intent,” he stated.
The Paramount Ruler of Riyom, Da Samuel Jok, also expressed appreciation to the delegation and praised the continued support of their representatives at the National Assembly. He called for the urgent implementation of the North Central Development Commission, saying it would provide sustained assistance to communities ravaged by insecurity. “We’ve seen the impact of similar commissions in other regions. It’s time we see the same here,” he said.
Also present at the event were Hon. Yakubu Dati, Chairman of the Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic; Hon. Sati Shuwa, Chairman of Riyom LGA; Hon. Moses Dachung Dadon, Member representing Riyom in the Plateau State House of Assembly; and Rt. Hon. Datong Timothy, liaison officer for Riyom LGA, among others.
The donation is expected to provide some relief to residents who have suffered losses following the recent wave of violent attacks in the area.
