Self-acclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), Simon Ekpa, has expressed confidence that his conviction by a Finnish court will be overturned on appeal.
Ekpa was convicted last year on terrorism-related offences linked by prosecutors to violence in Nigeria’s South-East. On September 1, 2025, a Finnish district court sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment.
Speaking to supporters during his appeal hearing on Thursday, August 6, Ekpa insisted he had been wrongly convicted and said he believes the truth will eventually emerge.
“I’m very confident that the truth is going to come out. They will know that the wrong person has been imprisoned,” he said.
The appeal proceedings are ongoing, and the court has yet to deliver its judgment.
Ekpa remains in custody pending the outcome of the appeal.
