Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level global gathering, where world leaders and senior government officials are discussing major international issues.
The Vice President’s arrival comes as the General Assembly enters its high-level segment, with discussions focusing on global peace and security, development, climate change, economic cooperation and reforms of the international system.
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate and participate in several high-level meetings and bilateral engagements on behalf of the country.
The Nigerian delegation includes senior government officials and representatives from relevant ministries and agencies.
Ahead of the General Assembly, Shettima received briefings on Nigeria’s priorities at the meeting, including the country’s foreign-policy objectives and its campaign for greater representation in key international institutions.
Nigeria is also expected to use the UN platform to highlight its position on global governance reforms and its interest in securing a permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council.
Shettima’s participation follows the decision by President Tinubu not to attend the 81st UN General Assembly in person, with the Vice President representing him at the event. Reports have noted that the President’s absence has generated political debate in Nigeria.
The UN General Assembly brings together representatives of member states to deliberate on issues affecting international peace, development and cooperation.
The 81st session is taking place in New York amid discussions on ongoing conflicts, climate concerns, artificial intelligence and proposed reforms to the multilateral system.
