Shehu Sani Urges Nigerians to Hold Their Senators Accountable Over Rejection of Electronic Transmission

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has advised Nigerians who are angered by the Senate’s rejection of real-time electronic transmission of election results to direct their grievances at their individual representatives in the National Assembly.

The Senate on Wednesday rejected a proposed amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3, of the Electoral Amendment Bill, which sought to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

The decision has continued to generate mixed reactions, with many Nigerians criticising the lawmakers, particularly Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and accusing the National Assembly of attempting to manipulate future elections in favour of President Bola Tinubu. However, some politicians have defended the move, citing concerns over possible network failures during elections.

Reacting to the controversy in a post on his X handle, Sani urged citizens to stop focusing solely on national leaders and instead engage their senators directly.

“The lawmakers have rejected the real-time electronic transmission of results,” Sani wrote.

“If you like what they did or you don’t like what they did, you should be courageous enough to go to the social media handle of the lawmaker representing your constituency and express your happiness or bitterness.

“Don’t focus on the President or Akpabio, who is just representing a district in Akwa Ibom. Be brave enough to mention your Senator by name on your handle. Everyone is an adult there,” he added.

Sani concluded by encouraging Nigerians to take responsibility in holding their elected representatives accountable for decisions taken on their behalf.
