The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) over the alleged mismanagement or diversion of N128 billion in public funds.
The suit, numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/143/2026, was filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, linking corruption in the power sector to persistent electricity challenges, including the national grid collapse recorded last week — the first in 2026.
According to Oluwadare, the allegations are contained in the latest annual report released by the Auditor-General on September 9, 2025.
SERAP is seeking an order of mandamus to compel the Minister of Power and NBET to account for the alleged missing or diverted N128 billion from the Ministry of Power and NBET.
The organisation is also asking the court to direct the respondents to disclose the names, official positions, and offices of all public officials who authorised, approved, or were involved in the release of the said funds.
“Nigerians continue to pay the price for widespread and grand corruption in the power sector. There is a legitimate public interest in ensuring justice and accountability for these grave allegations,” the statement said.
SERAP noted that granting the reliefs sought would help tackle corruption in the power sector, address recurring transmission failures, and improve Nigerians’ access to stable and uninterrupted electricity supply.
