Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), making him the first Nigerian to occupy the position in the organisation’s 70-year history.
His confirmation was announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following approval by CAF’s Executive Committee, months after he was appointed Acting General Secretary in March.
Adamu assumed the acting position following the resignation of his predecessor, Swiss-Congolese football administrator Veron Mosengo-Omba.
Before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Competitions and later Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played key roles in organising major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the CAF Champions League.
Reacting to the development, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulated Adamu, describing his confirmation as good news for Nigerian football administration.
The NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to excel in the role, describing him as a knowledgeable professional with considerable experience in football administration.
Ikpeme also assured him of the federation’s support, wishing him success in his new responsibility.
As General Secretary, Adamu will oversee CAF’s day-to-day administrative operations, legal affairs and the implementation of decisions taken by its Executive Committee.
His appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s presence in African football governance.
