Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Suspension, €255 Fine Over Portugal Camp Walkout

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for leaving the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, ahead of a UEFA Nations League fixture.

The federation’s disciplinary council announced the decision on Monday, October 19, 2026, after finding the 41-year-old Portugal captain guilty of deliberately violating its disciplinary regulations. The sanction followed his departure from the team’s camp on September 30, ahead of Portugal’s match against Denmark.

Ronaldo’s departure reportedly followed a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team. The Al-Nassr forward was left unused during Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway on September 27 and subsequently learned that he would not start against Denmark.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner accused the coach of breaking promises concerning his playing time, while Jesus denied making such an agreement.

Following the incident, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and supporters, accepting responsibility for his actions and expressing his willingness to face any disciplinary measures imposed by the federation.

In determining the punishment, the FPF reportedly considered Ronaldo’s apology and his contributions to football. The 30-day suspension represents the minimum penalty stipulated under the federation’s regulations for abandoning the national team without authorisation.

The suspension was backdated to October 1, meaning Ronaldo had already served part of the sanction by the time it was announced. Reports indicate that he is expected to be eligible for Portugal’s November Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales.

The development leaves his possible return to the national team dependent on selection by head coach Jorge Jesus, amid indications from the federation’s leadership that Ronaldo’s return remains desirable.
