Barcelona have confirmed the signing of former Manchester City captain Rodri in a deal worth £65.4 million.
The 30-year-old Spain international has signed a four-year contract with the LaLiga club, bringing an end to his seven-year spell at Manchester City.
Rodri, a World Cup winner and former Ballon d’Or winner, was a key figure in City’s success, helping the club win four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2023.
Barcelona reportedly had initial bids of £40 million and £55 million rejected by City before the two clubs eventually reached an agreement.
Speaking after completing the move, Rodri expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter in his career.
“I’m very happy and excited about this new stage in my career. It’s a fresh challenge, a chance to experience new things and feel that excitement again,” Rodri said.
“I’ve come to a hugely ambitious club that really suits my personality, so I’ll try to help in every way I can to achieve our objectives this season.”
Rodri also welcomed the opportunity to work under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, describing the German coach’s approach as different from what he had previously experienced.
“I’m happy to have a coach who I think will bring a lot to my career. It’s a style that I think is somewhat different from what I’ve experienced before, so it will be enriching and help me grow as a player.”
Rodri leaves Manchester City after making 298 appearances and winning 12 major honours, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and the Champions League.
His final two seasons at the club were affected by injuries, but he returned to top form during this summer’s World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament as Spain won the competition for the second time.
In his farewell message to City supporters, Rodri reflected on the personal impact of his time in Manchester.
“I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories.
“What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.
“City didn’t just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life.”
Rodri now begins a new chapter at Barcelona, where he will look to add to the club’s midfield options and compete for major domestic and European honours.
