Rivers Funeral Turns Tragic as Pastor Dies While Preaching on the Certainty of Death

A funeral service in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, turned tragic on Friday, October 2, when a pastor officiating at the ceremony suddenly collapsed while delivering a sermon and was later pronounced dead.

The cleric, identified as Deacon Steve Eyo, a resident pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), was preaching on the topic, “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond,” when the incident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses, Eyo was speaking about the inevitability of death and how it can come unexpectedly. He reportedly likened life to going to the market, explaining that while some people leave early and others stay longer, everyone eventually has to leave.

About 15 minutes into the sermon, the pastor suddenly collapsed, causing panic among mourners and other worshippers. His microphone reportedly fell to the floor as those present initially thought his action was part of his illustration about the suddenness of death.

Church ministers and choir members quickly gathered around him and attempted to provide assistance, while individuals with medical knowledge administered first aid. He was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital in the ambulance that had been arranged to transport the remains of the deceased.

The cleric was, however, pronounced dead at the hospital and his remains were taken to the mortuary.

The incident has left members of the community and the RCCG congregation in shock and mourning.
