Retired Headmistress Dies Suddenly at Her Retirement Ceremony in Osun

Tragedy struck in Ilesa, Osun State, on April 9, 2025, as Mrs. Dupe Omowumi Bello, a recently retired headmistress, collapsed and died during her retirement ceremony.

The event, held at the School for the Physically Challenged, Enu Odi, was meant to honour her decades-long commitment to education. Mrs. Bello, highly respected by colleagues and students alike for her dedication and service, had only recently stepped down from her role after a distinguished career. The ceremony was intended to honour her meritorious years of service.

According to eyewitnesses, she arrived at the venue in high spirits, joining a musical procession and dancing alongside well-wishers.

“She was smiling and dancing. Everyone was filled with joy, no one anticipated what would happen next,” a source.

“Shortly after taking her seat at the high table with her husband, Mr. Bello began to exhibit signs of distress just minutes later.

“She looked fatigued as if she was struggling to breathe, people rushed to assist her.

“First aid was administered on her, but as her condition worsened. She was swiftly transported to the nearby Ijesaland Geriatric Centre. Medical staff there referred her to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa, where she was pronounced d3ad on arrival,” she said.
