Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £120 million (€140 million), making the 19-year-old one of the most expensive footballers in history.
Diomande has signed a seven-year contract with the Spanish giants. If all performance-related add-ons are triggered, the transfer fee will surpass the £115 million (€133.9 million) Real Madrid agreed to pay Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023.
Paris Saint-Germain had been leading the race for the teenager’s signature but withdrew from negotiations after RB Leipzig rejected their £102.5 million bid on Sunday, paving the way for Real Madrid to complete the deal.
Should the full fee be paid, Diomande would become the fourth most expensive player in football history, behind Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Liverpool striker Alexander Isak. The transfer also makes him the most expensive African player ever, eclipsing the £72 million Arsenal paid Lille for fellow Ivorian Nicolas Pépé in 2019.
Liverpool had also expressed strong interest in the winger earlier in the summer, submitting an initial £69 million offer in June as they searched for a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah following his move to Trabzonspor.
Diomande becomes Real Madrid’s sixth signing of the summer under new head coach José Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi.
In a farewell message to RB Leipzig supporters, the winger thanked the club and its fans for their support.
“Thank you for the incredible support you’ve shown me. This move is a childhood dream come true. I’ll always be grateful to RB Leipzig for believing in me. Who knows? Maybe we’ll meet again one day in the Champions League,” he said.
Diomande enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough campaign in Germany, winning the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award for 2025/26 after scoring 12 league goals and providing eight assists. Across all competitions, he registered 13 goals and 10 assists, establishing himself as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
He also represented Ivory Coast at the FIFA World Cup, featuring in all four of the country’s matches before their elimination in the Round of 32 by Norway.
His rise has been rapid. After developing at an academy in the United States following his move from Ivory Coast, Diomande joined Spanish side Leganés in 2025 before earning a transfer to RB Leipzig later that year.
Real Madrid view the Ivorian as one of world football’s most exciting young attackers, with his pace, dribbling ability, creativity and versatility making him a key part of the club’s long-term plans.
Comfortable playing on either wing, Diomande can cut inside onto his stronger right foot from the left or use his pace and crossing ability from the right to create opportunities for teammates. Madrid believe his adaptability will strengthen their attacking options as they seek greater consistency on the right flank.
The club also expects his development to benefit from playing alongside creative full-backs such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella as he begins the next chapter of his career at the Santiago Bernabéu.
