The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called for the impeachment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if he is found culpable in the alleged alteration of a disputed tax law after its passage by the National Assembly.
The party made the call in a statement issued on Monday by its National Chairman, Falalu Bello, in which it described the controversy surrounding the tax law as an unforgivable breach of public trust and a mockery of the Nigerian people.
According to the PRP, revelations by a concerned member of the House of Representatives—whom the party commended—indicate that the executive arm of government may have clandestinely altered bills after they were passed by the National Assembly, without legislative approval.
The party described the alleged act as a dangerous pattern of executive impunity that threatens Nigeria’s democratic foundations and undermines due process.
It condemned the development as illegal and a direct assault on the independence of the legislature, as well as the constitutional right of Nigerians to transparent and accountable governance.
The PRP demanded a holistic and transparent investigation into the alleged insertions, deletions and modifications made to the tax law after its passage, insisting that all those responsible must be identified and sanctioned.
“This audacious act of executive dishonesty, characterised by the insertion, deletion and modification of substantive provisions after legislative passage, underscores a reckless disregard for the rule of law, separation of powers and the constitutional order,” the statement said.
“It is an unforgivable breach of trust, an open assault on the integrity of our legislative process, and a mockery of the Nigerian people.”
The party further accused the executive of undermining parliamentary procedures and imposing illegality under the guise of national interest, warning that such actions erode public confidence and expose the country to instability.
The PRP insisted that anyone found culpable, regardless of position, must face appropriate punishment, stressing that no individual, including the President, is above the law.
“If evidence emerges implicating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in these illegal manipulations, the PRP calls for his impeachment without delay,” the party stated.
It also called for the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed tax laws until all discrepancies between the version passed by the National Assembly and the version gazetted are thoroughly examined and resolved.
The party warned that failure to address the issue promptly could force it to seek judicial intervention to halt the enforcement of the laws and seek redress for constitutional violations.
The PRP further cautioned that continued disregard for constitutional order would deepen the governance crisis, weaken accountability and damage Nigeria’s credibility globally.
It urged Nigerians, civil society organisations and the legislature to resist what it described as an assault on democracy, reaffirming that the rule of law and constitutional integrity must take precedence at all times.
