Jos, October 11, 2025 — Scholars, researchers, health professionals, and faith leaders converged on Saturday for the official launch of “Natural Products Development – In the Age of Innovation: Phytomedicine, Phytogenomics, and the Challenges of Climate Change”, authored by Professor John C. Aguiyi, a distinguished scholar and Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Jos.

The event, held in Jos, Plateau State, celebrated decades of Professor Aguiyi’s pioneering work in pharmacology, ethnopharmacology, and biotechnology. It brought together personalities from academia, the health sector, and the faith community in what guests described as an inspiring blend of science, innovation, and spirituality.

A Scholar Dedicated to Healing and Humanity

In his address, Prof. Aguiyi said the book was born out of his lifelong desire to bridge traditional herbal knowledge with modern scientific discovery for the benefit of humanity.

“As a teacher, I don’t like theorizing things. Whatever I teach, I put in writing,” he explained. “God has endowed us with plants, and as a pharmacologist, I’ve researched their constituents and activities. This work shows that what our forefathers used for healing has scientific basis — and through research, we can now produce standardized, safe, and effective medicines.”

He recounted his 35 years of research, which led to several notable achievements, including the development of an anti-snake venom vaccine patented in both Nigeria and the United States, as well as herbal-based treatments for prostate ailments and other conditions. He called on government and relevant agencies to support local researchers in scaling innovations that can reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported drugs.

Exploring Science, Faith, and the Future

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Pastor Shae Bebeyi, lauded Prof. Aguiyi’s work as “timely and deeply relevant,” noting that the book bridges research, environmental consciousness, and spiritual responsibility.

“When I read the book, it talks about research, plant science, and climate change,” he said. “The health of natural plants is intricately linked with human health. Climate change is affecting that balance, and through research and sustainable practices, we can work toward a healthier, more resilient future for both plants and humans.”

Dr. Bebeyi also performed a poem titled “Climate Change: The Earth Cries”, emphasizing the global urgency of environmental conservation and Nigeria’s potential to lead through indigenous research and innovation.

Scholarly Review and Endorsements

Presenting a review of the book, Prof. Kakjing Falang of Plateau State University described it as “a timely and globally relevant resource.”
He explained that the book’s sixteen chapters provide a comprehensive understanding of how phytomedicine and phytogenomics can revolutionize modern drug discovery and sustainable healthcare.

“The author’s work integrates traditional medicinal knowledge with advanced biotechnological research,” Prof. Falang said. “In an era where the world is turning toward natural remedies, this book offers credible information on standardization, legislation, and stakeholder roles in natural product development.”

Family members, including Dr. George Chukwudi Onuorah, brother-in-law to the author, described the work as “a scientific discovery that has stood the test of time.” He said he travelled from New York to attend the launch in recognition of the author’s global impact and enduring contributions to medical research.

In her vote of thanks, the author’s daughter appreciated all guests, noting that her father’s pursuits were always driven by a vision for “a better and healthier world.”

Celebrating Knowledge and Future Generations

The ceremony also featured presentations by students from various schools in Jos, who delivered thought-provoking messages on climate change, natural foods, and healthy living — a fitting reflection of Prof. Aguiyi’s vision to inspire the next generation of scientists.

Goodwill messages were received from Amb. (Mrs.) Charity Alozie Njoku, Chairperson of the Planning Committee and founder of the Miracle Charity Foundation; EcoFarms and Agroservices Company; and several other institutions, all commending Prof. Aguiyi for his enduring contributions to science and humanity.
