President Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation As Inspector-General Of Police, Appoints Tunji Disu In Acting Capacity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, who cited pressing family considerations, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting IGP, the Presidency announced on Monday.

Egbetokun, appointed IGP in June 2023 for a four-year term set to end in June 2027 under the Police Act, submitted his resignation earlier today. In acknowledging his decision, President Tinubu praised Egbetokun’s decades of service, professionalism, and dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security.

Acting in accordance with existing laws, the President approved AIG Disu’s immediate appointment to provide leadership for the Nigeria Police Force amid current security challenges. The Presidency expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership abilities to guide the force effectively during this critical period.

“President Tinubu is confident that AIG Disu’s experience and demonstrated leadership capacity will ensure steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s substantive appointment, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

The Presidency reiterated its commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
