The Lagos State Police Command has clarified that the explosion recorded in the Mushin area of Lagos on Monday, June 22, was caused by a mechanical failure and not an improvised explosive device (IED), as earlier speculated.
The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Thursday, saying extensive investigations conducted by security agencies found no evidence of an explosive attack.
According to the police commissioner, forensic examinations carried out at the scene did not reveal any traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation devices, explosive residue, or any other components commonly associated with bomb explosions.
Fatai explained that preliminary findings indicated the incident resulted from the sudden release of pressure from a mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle.
The pressure reportedly caused the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle to shatter, leaving the occupant with only minor injuries.
Based on the outcome of the investigation, the police officially classified the incident as a mechanical explosion and assured residents that there was no indication of terrorism or any coordinated explosive attack.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and panic.
Police also reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities through appropriate security channels.
