Police Detain Two Officers Over Alleged N150,000 Extortion in Nasarawa

The Nigeria Police Force has detained two officers attached to the Nasarawa State Police Command over allegations of extorting N150,000 from a traveller and framing him for drug possession.

The Police Complaint Response Unit disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, following a viral video showing the officers attached to Ado Area Command in an altercation with two young travellers returning from a wedding and heading to the airport for a flight to Lagos.

The Unit said the officers were invited to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for questioning, adding that two of them had been detained pending the conclusion of investigations.

It also disclosed that the team leader, Inspector Sani Mikailu, reportedly died two days earlier under circumstances yet to be established.

According to accounts accompanying the viral video, the officers allegedly stopped the travellers, took one of them to an isolated location, seized his phone and subsequently accused him of possessing cannabis.

The officers allegedly demanded N100,000 to secure his release, with an additional N50,000 reportedly requested for fuel.

The victim reportedly refused to write a statement implicating himself, prompting the officers to allegedly prepare one claiming that drugs were found in his possession.

The Police Complaint Response Unit said investigations were ongoing and that its findings and recommendations would be forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police for further directives.
