All access roads leading to the “A-Class” Event Centre in Abuja have been barricaded by police ahead of a proposed special convention reportedly organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Tanimu Turaki.
According to Channels Television, the event, which is said to be linked to the ratification of former President Goodluck Jonathan as a presidential candidate, was scheduled to hold in Wuse 2, Abuja.
Security personnel reportedly deployed multiple patrol vans to block entry points from both the Wuse and Maitama axes, effectively restricting access to the venue for party members and other road users.
The development comes amid rising tensions within the PDP following reports that Nyesom Wike had warned hotels and event centres in Abuja against hosting what he described as unauthorised political gatherings.
The party has accused Wike of attempting to obstruct its planned convention, alleging that pressure was mounted on the management of the venue to cancel the booking despite full payment and compliance with all requirements.
The PDP stated that it had already secured the venue and duly notified security agencies about the planned event, which was expected to take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party insisted that the actions amounted to an attempt to suppress political opposition.
“We are certain that Nigeria is a country governed by law, and any attempt to use force to suppress political dissent and opposition is an aberration which must be resisted by all people of good conscience,” the statement read.
The party further said its legal team had been instructed to enforce its contractual agreement with the event centre and ensure that the planned gathering proceeds as scheduled despite what it described as attempts at intimidation.
