Plateau Road Crash: 20 Killed as Truck with Brake Failure Rams Into Vehicles in Riyom

Twenty people have been killed and several others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo axis of the Jos–Abuja Road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The crash occurred on Friday evening and involved a truck, a Hummer bus carrying passengers, other vehicles and a motorcycle.

According to reports, the truck suffered brake failure and rammed into vehicles travelling towards Jos. The impact caused the Hummer bus to catch fire, killing 18 passengers trapped inside, while two people riding a motorcycle also died.

The Plateau State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, confirmed that brake failure was responsible for the crash.

Ogungbemi said FRSC personnel were deployed to the scene to manage traffic, evacuate victims and clear the highway.

He said injured victims were taken for medical attention, while the bodies of those who died were being deposited at appropriate hospitals.

The FRSC commander urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and to pay particular attention to critical components such as braking systems before embarking on journeys.

The Hawan Kibo corridor is on the accident-prone Riyom section of the highway. Previous FRSC data cited by Premium Times recorded 132 crashes in the Riyom-Hawan Kibo-Forest axis between April and December 2024, resulting in 54 deaths and 392 injuries. (Premium Times Nigeria)

The latest crash has renewed concerns about road safety and the need for motorists, particularly operators of heavy vehicles, to carry out regular mechanical checks before using the highway.FB IMG FB IMG FB IMG FB IMG
