The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Jonathan Sambo Bitrus, from Bauchi State, for allegedly defrauding a Point of Sale (POS) operator of ₦1,550,000 at Terminus Market, Jos.

According to the victim, Miss Josephine Morolayo, the suspect visited her shop requesting to check his account balance. He later asked to withdraw ₦1,950,000, prompting her to initiate the transaction and hand him the POS machine to enter his PIN. She gave him ₦1,550,000 and asked him to wait for her boss, who was at the mosque, for the remaining ₦400,000.

When her boss returned, Miss Morolayo realized that the receipt she had seen was from a previous transaction and that the suspect had defrauded her before disappearing with the cash.

During police interrogation, Bitrus reportedly admitted that he accessed the victim’s transaction history while using the POS machine. He said he noticed a previous transaction of ₦1,950,000 and requested the same amount, though the account had no funds. He then cancelled the transaction but kept the cash he received.

Confirming the arrest, Plateau Police spokesperson SP Alfred Alabo said the suspect confessed to the crime and admitted using the money to buy an iPhone 13 Pro and clothing. Bitrus is now in police custody and will be charged to court for prosecution.
