The Plateau State Police Command has reportedly arrested a clergyman and two security operatives over an alleged plot to kidnap the wives of two prominent bishops in Jos.
The suspects were reportedly arrested following intelligence received by the police concerning an alleged criminal conspiracy and a foiled kidnapping attempt.
According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred at about 2:10 p.m. on August 7, 2026.
The publication identified one of the suspects as Rev. Hassan Yunisim Mijah, 42, of Tudun Wada, Jos North Local Government Area.
Sources reportedly told the publication that Mijah allegedly conspired with Sgt. Ezra Sunday, a Nigerian Air Force personnel, and OS Usman Khalid, a Nigerian Navy personnel, both attached to Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) in Jos.
The suspects were allegedly planning to kidnap the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi, who are reportedly residents of the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area.
Following receipt of the intelligence, police operatives led by the Commander of the Vigilance and Criminal Response Unit (VCRU) reportedly launched an operation that resulted in the arrest of the three suspects.
The suspects were also reported to have confessed to the alleged offence during interrogation.
According to the report, the Plateau State Police Command has formally informed the leadership of Operation Enduring Peace about the arrest of the two security personnel attached to the operation.
The police are reportedly continuing investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged conspiracy and identify and apprehend other persons who may be connected to the suspected criminal network.
Efforts by TheCable to obtain official confirmation from the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful.
Alabo reportedly answered a telephone call from the publication but ended the call shortly afterwards. A WhatsApp message was also sent to him seeking confirmation of the arrests and allegations, but he had not responded as of press time.
The allegations remain under investigation, and the suspects have not been convicted of any offence.
