Three women have been killed and another person injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 4:00–4:30pm on Monday, when the attackers reportedly stormed the mining site and opened fire on people working there before fleeing the area.
The attack was confirmed by Rwang Tengwong, spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), who said three women were killed while another person sustained injuries.
A resident of the community, John Silas, also confirmed the incident, saying the victims were carrying out their activities at the mining site when the attackers struck.
Tengwong expressed concern over the safety of residents and workers in the area and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.
He also urged authorities to take measures to prevent further attacks and enable residents to carry out their legitimate activities without fear.
The latest incident adds to security concerns in Barkin Ladi and surrounding communities, which have witnessed renewed attacks in recent days.
The identities of the victims and the attackers had not been officially disclosed as of Tuesday morning, while no security agency had publicly announced arrests in connection with the incident.
