Plateau State, Nigeria – Debrah Jalmet, the convener of the prestigious Plateau International Film Festival (PIFF), envisions the 2023 Plateau International Film Festival as a catalyst for social change, acceptance, and growth in the Plateau State film industry. The festival seeks to inspire filmmakers to capture the essence of local communities and integrate them into the broader film landscape.
In an exclusive interview with journalists in Jos on Thursday, Debrah Jalmat stressed the deep-rooted history of Plateau State in the Nigerian film industry. She emphasized that the festival’s core purpose is to encourage stakeholders to acknowledge and foster the growth of the film sector in Plateau, while also celebrating culture, creativity, and the narrative of the region.

The Plateau International Film Festival, according to Debrah Jalmet, creates valuable opportunities for filmmakers in the region. It serves as a platform for local filmmakers to showcase their work, network with industry professionals, and allows film enthusiasts to engage with and appreciate the efforts of these talented filmmakers.
The central theme of the 7th Edition of PIFF, “Film and Human Rights,” is set to explore the powerful influence of film on individuals, both positively and negatively. Jalmet regards this theme as an opportunity to present film as an educational tool, a means of projecting human rights, and a positive influencer in society. Furthermore, the festival provides a platform for communities to share their stories through the medium of film.
In a departure from previous editions, this year’s festival is non-competitive, focusing on fostering community involvement and networking. The introduction of a Street Film Festival format aims to bring film closer to the local community, inviting their participation. Prominent actors from Abuja, Kano, and Plateau State, along with local directors and film enthusiasts, are expected to attend the event, further enhancing the festival’s cultural exchange.
The past editions of PIFF have yielded remarkable successes, such as supporting and encouraging local filmmakers through workshops and providing exposure to budding talents. Additionally, the festival has served as a launching pad for several filmmakers who have gone on to achieve recognition on larger platforms.
The 7th edition of the highly anticipated Plateau International Film Festival is scheduled to commence on Friday, October 13th, starting at the Secretariat Junction Under Bridge in Jos, Plateau State. On Saturday, October 14th, the cinematic spotlight will shift to RCM Abattoir near the Police Station, with the grand finale scheduled for Sunday, October 15th at Fwavwei Junction in Rayfield, Jos, Plateau State.
As the festival approaches, film enthusiasts and supporters of cultural creativity eagerly anticipate the festivities and the powerful stories that will unfold at PIFF 2023.
