Gunmen have attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, killing two soldiers and a police officer in a late-night assault.
The attackers reportedly stormed the facility at about 11:40 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, opening fire on security personnel stationed at the gate and triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Sources said the victims were part of a security team deployed to the staff quarters of the institution when the incident occurred.
A source familiar with the incident said the assailants appeared to have targeted residences within the staff quarters, including those of senior officials of the institute.
The attackers were also alleged to have earlier left handwritten notes on the doors of some staff members, demanding ransom payments of $100,000 and N15 million each.
According to the source, the matter had been reported to management prior to the attack.
During the incident, the soldiers and police officer were killed in the exchange of fire as security operatives engaged the attackers.
Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Osime Samuel, confirmed that a security breach occurred within the vicinity of the institute, noting that the situation was quickly brought under control.
He, however, did not immediately confirm the casualty figures, but assured that normal activities within the institution were not disrupted.
“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the Institute in the early hours of today,” Samuel said.
He added that there was no immediate threat to the safety of staff, participants, residents, or facilities within the institute.

“The Management of NIPSS remains committed to the safety and security of all members of the Institute community and appreciates the professionalism of security personnel involved in the response,” he added.
Security sources confirmed that the bodies of the slain personnel have been deposited at a mortuary as investigations continue.
