The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has received a major political boost as a national coalition of prominent political leaders officially adopted the party as their platform ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the development, Hon. Solomon Nandy Chendan, the 2023 ADC gubernatorial candidate and current party leader in Plateau State, described the move as a “welcome development and a turning point in Nigeria’s political landscape.” He urged democrats across Plateau and beyond to align with what he termed the emerging “Arise and Shine” movement, which he said represents a credible alternative for good governance.
Chendan’s remarks followed the coalition’s announcement on Wednesday, where a host of national figures across party lines threw their weight behind the ADC, describing it as the most viable platform for achieving national transformation.
“We wholeheartedly welcome this development. We expect more members to join so we can build the new Nigeria we all desire,” Chendan stated. “The ADC is poised to lead a national rebirth, starting with a rescue mission in Plateau State under the leadership of our state party chairperson, Ambassador Hannatu Gagara.”
He further expressed optimism that the coalition’s endorsement has repositioned the ADC as a major opposition party and a formidable force ahead of the 2027 elections.
Calling on Plateau citizens to rally around the party, Chendan emphasized the ADC’s commitment to developmental politics, peace, and inclusive progress. “Our party is open and ready to welcome new members. Together, we can bring about the change this nation urgently needs.”
He added that the party’s slogan, “Arise and Shine,” reflects the genuine aspirations of the Nigerian people and sets it apart as a platform rooted in national interest.
The coalition that endorsed the ADC includes several political heavyweights. Former Senate President David Mark was named interim chairman, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was appointed secretary, and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, was announced as publicity secretary.
Other key figures in the coalition include Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami.
The adoption of ADC by such a broad-based coalition signals a potential realignment in Nigeria’s political terrain, with observers closely watching the party’s next steps as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
