Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure transparency and fairness in its anti-corruption campaign, following the arrest of former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal.
Reacting in a post on X, Obi stressed that the anti-graft war must be guided by conscience and the rule of law if it is to succeed.
“The fight against corruption in our country must be transparent to succeed,” Obi wrote. “The arrest and interrogation of the former Governor of Sokoto State, Rt Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, by the EFCC, has opened up an existing contradiction in the fight against corruption. The sincerity of leaders is what is needed to tackle corruption in our society.”
Obi reiterated his long-standing position that anti-corruption laws must apply equally to all, without targeting political opponents or perceived enemies of the government.
He added that the EFCC must replace “impressions and preconceptions” with evidence and facts, ensuring the public is convinced that its actions are even-handed and not driven by political convenience.
“A corruption-free Nigeria is possible only if our fight is transparent,” Obi concluded.
