The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in Oyo State.

The directive follows the abduction of 46 pupils and their teachers in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that has heightened fear and anxiety within affected communities and the education sector.

In a statement jointly signed by the state chairman, Hassan Fatai, and secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the continued detention of the victims has disrupted academic activities, discouraged school attendance, and increased tension across the state.

The NUT explained that the industrial action is aimed at drawing urgent attention from government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward the safe rescue of the abducted teachers and pupils.

The union directed all teachers in public schools to fully comply with the strike and remain at home until further notice, while urging members to remain law-abiding and vigilant.

Meanwhile, the development comes shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly directed the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to assist in securing the release of the abducted victims.

The strike has further heightened concerns over security in schools, as authorities continue efforts to rescue those still in captivity.
