Galatasaray suffered a surprising 2–0 defeat to Genclerbirligi in the quarterfinal of the Turkish Cup on Wednesday, despite entering the match as strong favourites following their recent league success.
The Istanbul side had just secured a major boost in form after winning the Super Lig title at the weekend, but they were unable to replicate that momentum in the cup clash.
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, who had been sidelined for over a month due to an arm injury sustained in a Champions League fixture against Liverpool FC, started the match on the bench as he continued his recovery.
Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Galatasaray failed to convert their opportunities into goals.
Genclerbirligi broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through Firatcan Uzum, putting the visitors ahead against the run of play.
In the 78th minute, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk introduced Osimhen in an attempt to rescue the game and restore attacking threat.
However, shortly after the substitution, Genclerbirligi doubled their lead in the 83rd minute through Adama Traore, effectively sealing their place in the next round.
The result marks a disappointing exit for Galatasaray, who were widely expected to progress given their domestic form and squad strength.
