The Special Task Force, Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), on Saturday concluded the final of its 5th Annual Peace, Unity and Scouting Football Tournament in Jos, Plateau State, reaffirming its commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence through sports.

The tournament, which drew teams from across the Operation’s Joint Operations Area (JOA), culminated in a grand finale attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, security officials, and community representatives from within and beyond the state.
In a goodwill message, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, Nigerian Army and Commander of OPSH, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, described the football initiative as a strategic tool for promoting inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony in volatile communities. Represented by Brigadier General M.O. Agi, Chief of Staff of OPSH, the commander noted that unifying efforts such as this remain key to sustainable peace and social development.

“This tournament is more than just a game. It is a platform for healing, understanding, and collaboration among our youth from diverse backgrounds,” said Brigadier General Agi.
“We are committed to supporting and expanding such initiatives to help raise future sporting talents while also discouraging youths from engaging in criminal activities.”
Major General Oyinlola further emphasized OPSH’s dedication to consolidating gains made in combating insecurity in the region, particularly through the arrest and neutralization of armed bandits.
Delivering a special address, the Ujah Anaguta of Jos, His Royal Majesty Johnson Pozoh Magaji, praised the military’s continued engagement with communities through civil-military relations, calling the tournament a symbol of hope and resilience. He urged greater public support for security agencies working tirelessly to ensure peace.
“We must not leave the task of securing our nation to the military alone,” he said. “This kind of sporting engagement brings the people and security agencies closer, fostering trust and unity.”
The day featured thrilling matches, with Bassa Local Government Area clinching third place after defeating Southern Kaduna, while Shendam LGA emerged champions in a tense final against Barkin Ladi, winning via penalty shootout.
Winners and participating teams were awarded medals and cash prizes, as the tournament closed on a celebratory note that underscored the unifying power of sports.
