A video showing a woman spraying naira notes during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Adamawa State has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with critics accusing authorities of selectively enforcing laws against currency mutilation.
The incident occurred during a performance by popular Hausa musician Dauda Kahutu Rarara, who was performing his song ‘Omo Ologo’ (Child of Glory) in honour of the President. In the video, a woman clad in All Progressives Congress (APC) attire approached the stage and sprayed naira notes while the performance was ongoing. She was later cautioned by another woman nearby, but clips of the act quickly went viral.
The video drew heavy criticism from social media users, many of whom highlighted perceived inconsistencies in the application of the law. One user, @Clement C Mbanugo, wrote: “I blame Nigerians for the arrogance of EFCC bandits. If those idiots come to arrest anybody in your area, make sure they don’t go back with their complete teeth.”
Other users voiced similar concerns. @Nigeria is my only country commented: “The law is meant for only the people that are not supporting APC. Mtcheeeew.” @King Dave 3 added: “It’s only in Nigeria spraying money is a crime, but you’re free to spray in front of President Tinubu. Everything is fine if you’re APC member.”
Some compared the incident with past cases where individuals faced arrest or prosecution for similar acts. @PETER OBI’s TRUMPETER noted that while the woman was only cautioned, others had received harsher penalties. @Emmanuel Benjamin suggested that the response might have been different if opposition supporters were involved, while @BIGI simply wrote: “Make them go arrest am nah.”
The episode has reignited debates over fairness in law enforcement and the enforcement of currency regulations in Nigeria.
