A stampede at the residence of the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, in Gusau, Zamfara State, has left one person dead and six others injured, security sources confirmed on Friday.

According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on Thursday when a large crowd surged forward while attempting to welcome the minister, resulting in panic and a stampede.

One of the victims, 23-year-old Khalifa Uzairu, was confirmed dead on arrival at Farida General Hospital. The injured — identified as Ayuba Sani, Muhammadu Adams, Aliyu Aminu, Shaaban Hamisu and Inusa Musa Shehu — were immediately evacuated to the hospital for treatment.

Hospital officials said the surviving victims are currently receiving medical care and are in stable condition.

Security operatives have since been deployed to restore order around the minister’s residence, while an investigation has begun to determine the circumstances that led to the stampede and whether any individuals or groups may be held responsible.

Authorities have appealed to the public to remain cautious during public gatherings and to adhere to security directives to avoid similar incidents in the future.
