France winger Michael Olise has etched his name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming the first player to record seven assists in a single tournament.
The Bayern Munich playmaker surpassed the previous record of six assists set by Brazilian football legend Pelé during the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Olise reached the milestone during France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off on Saturday, capping an outstanding individual campaign despite Les Bleus narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
The 23-year-old emerged as one of the tournament’s most influential creative players, playing a pivotal role in France’s run to the semi-finals. His vision, precise passing and attacking creativity consistently unlocked opposition defences, with many of his assists contributing to captain Kylian Mbappé’s goals.
A graduate of Crystal Palace’s academy, Olise has enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years and continued his impressive form on the biggest stage, establishing himself as one of the standout performers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although the expanded 48-team tournament allowed participating nations to play more matches than in previous editions, FIFA’s official statistics recognise Olise’s seven assists as the highest ever recorded by a player in a single World Cup campaign.
France concluded the tournament with a defeat to England in the third-place play-off, but Olise’s record-breaking achievement remains one of the standout individual milestones of the competition, eclipsing a record that had stood since Pelé’s legendary performances more than five decades ago.
