The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Wednesday commenced an indefinite strike over unmet welfare demands, raising the likelihood of nationwide power outages in the coming days.

In a notice signed by its Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, the union said the decision followed the expiration of its ultimatum to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) management.

Among the grievances listed are the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, casualisation of workers, non-payment of staff salaries since April 2025, and the failure to provide working tools, personal protective equipment (PPEs), and operational vehicles. The union also raised concerns over unresolved issues from the unbundling of TCN and the non-payment of retirement benefits.

“It is unfortunate that the TCN Management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves and a lack of regard for the hard-working staff of TCN. We cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being vehemently violated and the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry going down the drain. To this end, the Union is compelled to withdraw its services,” the statement read.

The NUEE directed its members to withdraw services immediately and comply fully with the strike directive “until such time that the management is ready to discharge its obligations towards the workforce.”

The union had previously embarked on strike in June 2024, disrupting electricity supply across the country.

At the time of filing this report, TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, had yet to respond to enquiries on the development.
