The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, thunderstorms and rainfall across different parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday this week.
The forecast was contained in the agency’s three-day weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday night, August 30, 2026.
Monday
NiMet said parts of the northern region would experience sunny conditions with intermittent cloud cover, while thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected in some areas.
In the morning, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna states.
By afternoon and evening, similar conditions are expected in parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory.
Later in the day, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across parts of Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa states, as well as the FCT.
For the southern region, NiMet forecast moderate rainfall during the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa states, with rainfall expected to become more widespread later in the day.
Tuesday
The weather pattern is expected to continue on Tuesday, although the areas affected are likely to vary.
Morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states.
By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across parts of Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa states.
In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are forecast over parts of Niger and Kwara states, as well as the FCT.
“Later during the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated across the region,” NiMet stated.
In the South, light rainfall is expected in parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers states during the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected to spread across the region later in the day.
Wednesday
For Wednesday, NiMet forecast partly cloudy conditions across the northern region, with possible morning thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe states.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected to become more widespread across the North during the afternoon and evening.
The North-Central region is expected to experience sunny conditions with patches of cloud in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the day.
“Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire region later in the day,” the agency said.
In the South, generally cloudy conditions are expected, with chances of light morning rainfall over parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.
NiMet also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall across the entire southern region later in the day.
NiMet Issues Safety Advisory
The weather agency advised residents in areas expecting thunderstorms to exercise caution, warning that strong winds could precede rainfall.
It urged residents to secure loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds and cause injuries or damage.
NiMet also warned that prolonged rainfall, particularly in coastal areas of the South, could trigger flash floods.
The agency advised motorists to avoid driving or wading through floodwaters and to refrain from driving under heavy rainfall where visibility and road conditions are poor.
Residents were also advised to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or trees.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet to support their operational planning.
The agency further urged members of the public to monitor its regular weather updates and consult its official platforms for further information.
