The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast three days of thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country, warning residents in flood-prone areas to take necessary precautions.
The weather outlook, covering Wednesday to Friday, September 9 to 11, 2026, indicates varying levels of rainfall across the northern, North-Central and southern regions.
For Wednesday, NiMet predicted patches of cloud over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of Taraba and Kebbi. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected in parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.
In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms and light rainfall are expected over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory, followed by moderate thunderstorms across most parts of the region later in the day.
The southern region is expected to experience cloudy conditions and morning rainfall in parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom, with moderate rainfall forecast across most areas later in the day.
For Thursday, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna, with moderate thunderstorms expected in several northern states during the afternoon and evening.
The agency also forecast morning thunderstorms over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue states, followed by moderate rainfall across the North-Central region. In the South, light morning rainfall is expected over several states, with continuous rainfall possible across much of the region later in the day.
NiMet specifically warned of a high possibility of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River during the forecast period.
Friday is expected to bring further thunderstorms and moderate rainfall, particularly across parts of the North and North-Central regions. In the South, morning moderate rainfall is forecast over parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, with moderate rain expected across much of the region later in the day.
NiMet also warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to secure loose objects that could be blown away. People in areas at risk of flash flooding were urged to activate emergency measures and remain alert to official weather updates.
The agency further advised motorists to avoid driving through heavy rainfall and flooded roads, while residents were urged to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees because of the risk of falling branches.
The latest forecast forms part of NiMet’s continuing weather-monitoring and early-warning efforts as the rainy season persists across the country.
