NIMC Arrests Suspects Accused of Charging Nigerians for Free NIN Registration

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspects allegedly involved in illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion.

The arrests followed an enforcement operation conducted by the Commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) in Gwagwalada, Abuja, and other locations. Equipment allegedly used for illegal enrolment activities was also seized during the operation.

In a statement issued on Monday, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr Kayode Adegoke, said the operation was aimed at curbing unauthorised enrolment and unethical practices capable of compromising the integrity and security of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

The Commission warned Nigerians against using unapproved centres or individuals for NIN registration and related services, stressing that enrolment can only be carried out at NIMC-approved centres. Requests for personal data modification, it added, should be processed through its official self-service platform.

NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the Commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion and unethical conduct, assuring Nigerians and legal residents of its commitment to providing seamless enrolment services.

The Commission also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application for additional security features and access to services, including printing their NIN slips.

Members of the public were urged to use only approved NIMC channels and visit its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, for accurate information.
