In response to recent claims circulating online, the Defence Headquarters has refuted allegations suggesting that the Guards Brigade has been placed on high alert due to suspicions of a coup plot in Nigeria. The accusations, published by SaharaReporters on February 25, 2024, alleged unusual movements prompting emergency meetings involving President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Staff to the President, and the Commander of the Guards Brigade.

The Defence Headquarters issued a statement categorically denouncing these claims as baseless and malicious. They clarified that the Guards Brigade, responsible for protecting the seat of power and the Federal Capital Territory, maintains a constant state of readiness as part of its regular duties.

General Christopher Musa OFR, Chief of Defence Staff, has consistently emphasized the Armed Forces’ commitment to upholding democracy in Nigeria. Consequently, the Defence Headquarters vehemently condemned the unfounded assertions, dismissing them as fabrications intended to sow discord. They urged the public to disregard the false information.

Moreover, the Defence Headquarters called upon relevant security agencies to take appropriate action against Sahara Reporters for disseminating what they deemed unpatriotic content. Additionally, they announced plans to pursue legal recourse against the publication for its role in potentially stoking tensions within the nation.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director Defence Information, issued the statement on February 25, 2024, affirming the Defence Headquarters’ commitment to maintaining security and stability in Nigeria.
