The Niger State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Minna, the state capital, following protests and unrest over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced the curfew on Friday, September 18, 2026, directing residents to remain indoors as authorities move to restore calm and prevent further destruction of property.
The curfew took effect immediately after the Friday Juma’at prayers.
The development followed protests in parts of Minna after the 37 suspected miners died while in NSCDC custody. The victims were reportedly arrested during enforcement operations against illegal mining activities around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis between September 15 and 16.
The deaths have sparked public concern, with questions raised over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports, the NSCDC has commenced an investigation into the deaths, while the Niger State Government has ordered forensic examinations and autopsies to determine the exact cause.
The unrest also reportedly resulted in the vandalisation of government facilities, a bank, political party offices and private businesses.
Announcing the curfew, Governor Bago appealed to residents to remain calm and exercise restraint while security agencies work to restore order.
The Federal Government has also ordered an investigation into the incident, with the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, suspended pending the outcome of the probe.
Authorities have stressed that the cause of the deaths has not been conclusively established and that investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Government has declared three days of mourning for the deceased and cancelled a political rally scheduled to take place in Minna.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew and protect lives and property across the state capital.
