Mojisola Meranda officially assumed office as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 27, marking a significant shift in leadership following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Meranda was welcomed to her new office by fellow lawmakers, though Obasa was notably absent. After the formal ceremony, the legislators gathered for a group photograph, expressing their full support for her leadership.
In a show of solidarity, the lawmakers praised Meranda for her leadership qualities, chanting, “Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker.”
“Speak for Lagos. Continue with your work,” they added.
The legislators joined the Speaker in her office, where intense prayers were offered to mark the beginning of her tenure.
The ceremony follows claims by Obasa that his impeachment was unconstitutional and did not follow due process.
Security around the Lagos State House of Assembly has been heightened to ensure a peaceful transition and uninterrupted legislative activities.
In a notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, all staff members and legislative aides were instructed to present valid identity cards to access the premises.
The notice read, “Following management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Entry will be denied to anyone without a valid ID card. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.”
